Richard Stooksbury In The Press

"I think it's great. It's got a lot of soul. I like it when a guy sings like he means it."

-Bill Morrissey     folksinger/novelist

"A song from Richard Stooksbury has a breath of familiarity to it that could very well have come from your own memories, your own life. A lot of people can write a song. Richard Stooksbury puts life into one."

-Mark Wehner
Hayden's Ferry Recording Artist
and Host of Americana Tonight!

"It's a great record !!!! I give it four and a half stars (max 5) and it's the first time someone has gotten that many in our magazine!"

-Francois Braeken of Rootstime Magazine (Belgium)

"Your debut CD sounded so good that we immediately played several tracks on the air. Fantastic stuff! The album is one of
my favorites of the year. Currently we are spinning the album every 5 hours."

"Stooksbury is a late-blooming Americana artist whose years spent growing up with a musical family in Appalachia shine through on his self-titled debut CD."

Richard Stooksbury vowed to make 2004 his breakthrough year. He made good on the promise last fall when he recorded his first album, "Richard Stooksbury," a collection of songs chronicling his story as a journeyman songwriter in Nashville. more >>

"It is good to get music
that sounds different from what we usually can expect from Nashville.
I have a high respect for artists like you who give the listeners the
feeling that the artistic process is the search for quality. Beautiful
songs, real catching voice, from the beginning to the end, your CD is
a real pleasure. You never have the feeling
you hold a record that has already been recorded a hundred times. It is
the result of the work of an artist, in the literal meaning of the
word. It is highly respectable."

-Mike Penard, DJ, American Roots Music (France)

Richard Stookbury, first album

In prospect of my holidays, I had provided myself with a bunch of CD's, some of my own rack and some out of the RealRootsCafe nest. The biggest surprise of these albums, speaking for myself, was the more than excellent debut of Richard Stooksbury, a magnificent country-album, but within my criteria he (fortunately) leans rather on the folk idiom.

This CD impressed me just as much as the Eric Taylor debut album 'Watermelon' in 1995. The comparison lies in the strength of the songs, but in the meantime Stooksbury's tracks are more light-hearted.

An ideal album to listen to more frequently. His voice resembles the voice of Tom Waits on his first and second album,  less 'gravel' indeed, but very pleasant. Wonderful music being played by Stooksbury and his pals: John R. Crowder, Fats Kaplin and Al Goll. By the way , on his own website he mentions  that he started already to work on the next album, so I'd better prepare myself for it!

Some artists are just acting, but not this 'newcomer' from Tennessee;  this is music as it should be: from the inside to the outside. Beautiful! (and don't forget the hidden track with 'the three little words')

"Truly Fabulous Debut. Really! Four and half Stars".

-CtrlAltCountry (Belgium)

"Stooksbury proves to be a storyteller made of the right stuff. Using his experiences in life he tells about the events you and I can go through daily, as well as describing complex emotions. Country-folk (music) that sounds laidback but  the simplicity is well chosen. This record is a must!"

-Peter Pleyte, AltCountry.nl (The Netherlands)

RICHARD STOOKSBURY, Richard Stooksbury (Hylotone 001). At first listen, Stooksbury's voice isn't pretty, but it's honest, and that's what first hooked me in. This Appalachian-born Nashvillian gathered a fine cast of players to showcase his catchy and down-home style of writing. Stooksbury himself plays everything from guitar to spoons to ukulele. The result is a success - a cohesive production that showcases the vivid characters of his imagination.
